2020 Retail Crime Survey Published

In this challenging coronavirus climate, you might think that shopping for other stuff aside from food would fall by the wayside… but it’s good news for retail, as figures have just been released that show consumers are starting to hit the shops to get their gifts and spruce up their homes in time for Christmas.

The latest BRC-KPMG Retail Sales Monitor released the data that showed that total sales increased by 5.6% in September—the biggest improvement in credit card spending since February (before the coronavirus pandemic fully hit the UK).

“September saw a big improvement in retail sales growth,” said Helen Dickinson, the Chief Executive of the British Retail Consortium (BRC). “September sales have also given retailers early signs that consumers are starting their Christmas shopping earlier this year, which retailers are encouraging their customers to do in order to manage demand at Christmas and keep people safe.”

Barclaycard has also released separate consumer spending figures that show a 2% increase in spending in September. The data revealed that food spending was particularly strong last month, as shoppers stocked up on more essentials amid concerns over tightening lockdown restrictions.

The report also stated that spending on essential items increased by 6.1%, driven by a 15.4% lift in supermarket shopping.

“Consumers clearly made the most of the sunshine by socialising in September, with spending at pubs and bars seeing the first increase since before the national lockdown was introduced in March,” said Raheel Ahmed, Head of Consumer Products at Barclaycard.

“However, we also saw households preparing to spend more time inside as winter draws closer, with home improvement increasing as a result,” he said.
