There are all sorts of strategies you can employ to help increase footfall when lockdown restrictions are lifted and perhaps the most important one is making sure that your shopfronts are welcoming, tidy and clean, ready and inviting to help bring people through the door.

Window displays are often amazing calling cards, as is often seen during the Christmas period, when businesses really go all out and come up with enticing seasonal decorations and themes to help attract custom.

But there’s no reason why this has to be the sole preserve of the festive season, so why not change it up every few months to keep it fresh and interesting? You also increase your chances of people snapping photos of your business and sharing them on social media, which can help draw others in, as well.

It could also be worth thinking about if there are any other complementary businesses in your local area that you could partner up with and do some reciprocal marketing with to help drive customers through both of your doors.

If you sell musical instruments, for example, what about visiting local record stores to see if you can put some flyers up? And you can do the same for them.

Don’t forget about the power of the internet, either, and it can be incredibly beneficial for your bricks and mortar shop to have a strong online presence. You can easily promote new products and offers in this way, and encourage people to come and see you in person.

Customer loyalty is also absolutely key and you can help build this up by offering in-store services that can help bring people in. For example, if you sell accessories and other jewellery, why not offer a jewellery cleaning service free of charge? Or perhaps jewellery repairs? There’s a lot that can be achieved with just a little bit of ingenuity.

And what about holding special one-off events and inviting people to come and take part? If it’s something special, you could get in touch with your local paper to see if they would be interested in doing some coverage for it.

Regular monthly classes are also a great way of encouraging people to come and see you, and it’s a great way to really get to know your customers. Before you know it, they’ll be customers for life!
